Strengthen Story Setting with Sensory Description

Write Your Own Classic_Setting_sign

Most narrative writing establishes a sense of place and time immediately. Sometimes that’s sneaked in, little dribbles of details that create a sense of discovery. That broad first glance of place and time, that first look around, is known as an “establishing shot” in film; in writing, it’s called the “setting.” For a short writing lesson to improve your settings, or for a notes review of Lesson 1 in Write Your Own Classic, you can view the PowerPoint. You’ll also learn some tips for descriptive writing to help your setting seem real and credible to readers.

Setting is the time and place, the when and where.
